In Türkiye, it’s common for tenants to make small modifications to their rented homes. However, not all renovations are treated equally in the eyes of the law or the lease agreement. Understanding which changes are permitted without the landlord’s consent — and which require written approval — is essential for avoiding legal disputes and protecting your security deposit. Modifications That Do Not Require Landlord Approval: Certain cosmetic or non-structural improvements can typically be made without prior approval, provided they are reversible. These include hanging shelves, artwork, or small fixtures on walls; installing light fixtures that don’t require rewiring; adding portable heating or cooling units; painting the walls in a neutral color; and installing child safety devices. While these changes don’t require permission, tenants must return the property to its original condition.
